Earth Day Clean Up - Friday, April 28, 2005
On April 22nd, 2005, "Earth Day" the Malvern Science Resource Centre (MSRC), sponsored a community clean-up for the Malvern area. Groups from three schools met at the Bethlehem All-Age School at 3 p.m. The schools represented were Bethlehem All-Age, Schoolfield All-Age, and Bethlehem College. The importance of keeping the community clean, why a cleanup was necessary, and why not to throw your trash on the ground, were discussed with the students . After the environmental talk, the students were given a snack, a garbage bag, and gloves with which to pick up garbage. All groups finished at the Post Office to celebrate a cleaner community with some hard earned patties generously donated by Mother's in Santa Cruz, along with some juice, and cakes baked by Mrs. Folks, and Miss Bernise Bennett. The assistance of students from Bethlehem College, and teachers from Bethlehem All Age, was a great help in making the clean-up a success. The group packed close to fifty garbage bags with litter found on the banks of the road. Funds from the National Environmental Societies Trust purchased supplies as well as six garbage barrels. These six barrels will be placed throughout Malvern in order to provide enough locations to dispose of waste in the community. It is hoped that by showing the community a clean and beautiful environment they will think twice before dropping a piece of garbage on the roadside in the future.
